Cytrabine (Cytosar®)

 

This is the last part of the ESHAP treatment, and is only given on day 5.

 

Possible side effects

 

Bone Marrow

A temporary reduction in bone marrow function, which can also result in bruising or bleeding and infection. This effect can begin about 7 days after the treatment has been given and usually reaches it lowest point at 10-14 days after the chemotherapy, increasing steadily thereafter.

 

Nausea and Vomiting

Can be controlled with medicine.

 

Diarrhoea

Can easily be controlled with medicine.

 

Loss of Appetite

Talk to your doctor, who can give you literature or refer you to a dietician.

 

Raised levels of uric acid in the blood

This can lead to gout.

Drink plenty of water to flush out the system, and a drug called Allopurinol may also be given to stop the build up.

 

Gritty Eyes

Eye drops are available to help with this condition if it happens

 

Mouth sores and ulcers

Mouth washes and creams are available to help if you develop mouth problems.

 

Less Common Side Effects

 

Hair loss

Uncommon with this drug, but hair may thin out, or occasionally be lost completely

 

Liver

Problems may cause changes in your liver function, however, your doctor will monitor this carefully.

 

Lethargy, sleepiness, confusion and loss of balance.

This is very rare and only happens with high dose treatment.

 

Changes to your lungs.

Tell your doctor if you notice any cough or shortness of breath.

 

Soreness and redness of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

This is temporary and will improve when treatment ends.

 

Skin changes

You may develop a rash which may be itchy.

 

A flu-like effect.

Can last for a few days: with flu symptoms such as headaches, aching joints or muscles, a temperature and chills.

It is very important to get plenty of fluids if this happens, ideally a glass an hour, with plenty of rest as well.

 

Effect on the nervous system

At very high doses some damage to the nerves, both inside and outside of the brain, can cause a variety of symptoms including fits (seizures) and mood changes.

 

Fertility

Your ability to conceive or father a child may be affected by taking this drug.

 

Contraception

It is not advisable to become pregnant or father a child while taking this drug.
