My Dad

On 15th August 2002, I had finished my final chemotherapy, and was leaving Antrim Hospital when my mobile rang. It had been turned off all day and when I answered it, I was presented with several messages from Whiteabbey Hospital where my dad was. They wanted me to contact them as his condition had changed for the worse.

He had been in hospital for the five weeks previously and had come out a new man; full of life and energy. He had had chest problems as a result of years of smoking and asthma, but as I said, he was totally overhauled and bright as a button.

Two days later, he was back in hospital again with renal failure.

I finished my chemo on 15th, and on the 17th at 12:10am he went to a better place.

I could say all sorts of things about him, and he was a well known figure all throughout Newtownabbey and Belfast, but I think that this simple phrase says it all.

I loved him; I miss him;

and I feel his presence with me every day.
