Methylprednisolone

 

This is part of the ESHAP treatment, and is given on days 1 – 5 inclusive.

 

Possible side effects

 

Irritation of the stomach lining

Steroids can increase production of stomach acid and lower the production of protective mucus, which can cause irritation to the lining of the stomach.

Tell your doctor if you suffer any stomach pains or discomfort.

 

Blood sugar

Your blood sugar levels will be checked regularly by blood tests, and you may be asked to test your own urine for sugar. Tell your doctor if you are very thirsty or are passing more urine than usual.

 

Fluid Retention

Your ankles and/or fingers may swell, and you may have a bloated feeling in the abdomen. This is due to changes in your salt and water balance.

Tell your doctor if any of the above symptoms appear.

 

Increased chance of infection and delayed healing of injuries

Good hygiene is essential to prevent infection, but if you notice signs of infection, inflammation, redness, soreness, a high temperature, or if cuts take longer than usual to heal, you should tell your doctor immediately.

 

Menstrual Changes

Women may find that their periods become irregular or stop completely.

 

Behavioural Changes

Mood swings, difficulty sleeping, and irritability, can occasionally happen.

Difficulty sleeping may be reduced by taking the steroids in the early part of the day, but you must discuss this with your doctor first.

 

Less Common Side Effects

 

Eye Changes

There is an increased risk of eye infections, which could lead to cataracts or glaucoma.

Tell your doctor if you have any eye problems

 

Cushing’s Syndrome.

Acne, puffiness of the face, dark marks on the skin, and facial hair in women.

Can be reduced by taking the steroids early n the morning, or by taking them on alternate days.

Your doctor will advise you on the best remedy.

 

Muscle Wasting

Wasting of leg muscles may occur, and cramps can start for a short time when steroids are stopped.

 

Osteoporosis

With very long-term use, calcium may be lost from the bones. This can result in lower back pain, an increased susceptibility to fractures and a loss of height.
