Motability

Motability is a national UK charity, which helps disabled people and their families to become mobile, by providing them with cars and powered wheelchairs.

Shown on the right is my Motability car, which cost me about £2700 + my mobility allowance part of my Disability Living Allowance.

You can choose a car from most manufactures, and some don’t cost anything extra. My car is long wheel base, metallic, automatic, with a couple of other extras included, and that’s why it cost extra.

My total DLA (Disabality Living Allowance) is roughly £100 per week, and the mobility allowance is roughly £39, so I get the car, which is taxed, insured and maintained by Motability, for only £39 per week. After that I am still left with £240 a month DLA, and all I have to spend is the petrol money.

Under the scheme you can choose a three year contract hire scheme (New Car), a four or five year hire purchase scheme to buy and own your car (New Car), or a two, three, four, or five year hire purchase scheme to buy a used car.

You need to apply for the DLA  as soon as possible after you are diagnosed.
