Taste Wow,
does your taste change when you’re on chemo? When
I was receiving my
CHOP chemotherapy, I had a permanent metallic type of
taste in my mouth, and couldn’t taste any of the food I was eating. It is
hard to describe it well, but it is a problem if, like me, you like your
food. Old favourites, which you know you like, will become unpleasant and
very frustrating to eat. I
found that burnt steaks or burnt burgers were something that appealed to me,
but when I offered them to the wife or kids, they thought I was mad, but I
did get some sort of taste from them, which was mildly pleasant. For
drinks, you couldn’t beat Bovril. Not something that I would normally take,
but with a big thick spoonful of Bovril in cup of boiling water, I got my
taste fix for the day. Strong
smoked fish was also something that I became partial to, but you will have to
try different things that you wouldn’t normally dream of, and see if you can
come up with something better. I tried everything that was available, but the
above is really the sum total of my success. The
good news is that once chemotherapy finishes, your taste will return, but be
warned, it is a slow process, and in my case took a couple of months.
